Webster is a city in the southeastern corner of Harris County, Texas, at the heart of the Clear Lake area between Houston and Galveston Bay. It sits about 25 miles from downtown Houston and immediately south of the NASA Johnson Space Center, which opened in 1964 after NASA selected the Clear Lake site in 1961. That decision transformed Webster from a small farming and stopover community into a fast-growing suburban city tied to the aerospace and high-tech economy. Today Webster functions as both a bedroom community and a daytime employment destination. Its daytime population swells substantially as workers arrive for jobs in the Clear Lake area's technology, healthcare, and service sectors, while many residents live in the apartments and townhomes that cluster along its main corridors. Clear Creek ISD, which serves the city, was formed in 1948 through the consolidation of Webster's schools with those of Kemah, League City, and Seabrook.
