Mustang Ridge is a city in Central Texas whose boundaries span three counties—Travis, Bastrop, and Caldwell—positioning it on the southern edge of the Austin metropolitan area. The community is small in its core population but geographically expansive, having grown through annexation and new development as the State Highway 130 corridor transformed southeast Travis County. The 2010 census counted 861 residents, and the city's footprint has since extended across county lines as the region around Austin has expanded. Transportation has been the engine of Mustang Ridge's growth. State Highway 130, a regional tollway, passes directly through the community, connecting the Austin area south toward Seguin and Interstate 10. The segment from SH 71 to US 183 near Mustang Ridge opened in 2008, and a 41-mile extension from Mustang Ridge to I-10 in Seguin followed in 2012. That corridor turned a quiet rural area into one of Central Texas' growth routes, bringing new housing and development to the community's doorstep. Education and services connect Mustang Ridge to the surrounding region. The Travis County portion of the city is served by Del Valle Independent School District, which educates students from Mustang Ridge, Creedmoor, and other southeast Travis County communities. Other portions of the city fall within neighboring districts that correspond to the county lines it crosses. For residents, Mustang Ridge offers a low-density, semi-rural setting within commuting distance of downtown Austin and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The community's growth mirrors the larger transformation of the Austin metro area, as farmland and pasture give way to new housing along the corridor. Its multi-county boundaries and tollway access make it a distinctive, transitional place on Austin's southern edge, where the region's rural past and suburban future meet.
