Carmine is a small city in Fayette County, Texas, situated on U.S. Highway 290 near the Fayette-Washington county line. It lies between Giddings and Brenham, roughly halfway between Houston and Austin and about 90 minutes west of Houston. The community began as a German-American settlement and grew as a railroad town in the late 19th century. The townsite traces its development to the arrival of Dr. B. J. Thigpen and his family in 1885, and the area's German heritage remains a thread in its identity. With a population of about 244 at the 2020 census, Carmine is among the smaller incorporated communities in the region, carrying the motto "The Little City With a Big Heart." The German heritage remains woven into the town's identity, carried forward from the families who settled Fayette County in the 19th century. The railroad that once anchored the community has given way to Highway 290 as the town's lifeline, but Carmine keeps its small-town, agricultural character. Carmine is best known today as the eastern gateway to Round Top and its internationally known antiques shows. The Original Round Top Antiques Fair, founded in 1968, draws large seasonal crowds to the corridor, and several venues operate in and around Carmine at the junction of Highway 290 and FM 458. Beyond the antiques season, the town serves passing highway traffic and benefits from its position between the region's larger towns. Students in the area attend the Round Top-Carmine Independent School District, a small rural district serving the two neighboring communities. For residents, Carmine offers quiet, small-town living at the crossroads of the Houston-Austin corridor, with the cultural and commercial draw of Round Top just down the highway and the convenience of a major route between the state's two largest cities.
