Bosque County Seat

About Meridian, TX

Welcome to Meridian, the county seat of Bosque County and a quiet ranching community at the edge of the Hill Country, with Meridian State Park at its doorstep.

Meridian is a city in central Texas that serves as the county seat of Bosque County, about 47 miles northwest of Waco and near the northern edge of the Hill Country. The town was laid out in 1854, when Dr. Josephus Steiner and Andrew Montgomery donated 120 acres after Norwegian settlers arrived in the area, and lots were auctioned that same year. The county was surveyed by George Bernard Erath, whose name survives in neighboring Erath County. The 1886 Bosque County Courthouse, with its white stone facade and clock, still anchors the square and defines the town's civic center. With a population of about 1,400, Meridian is a small but complete community: it has its own two-campus school district, a working courthouse square, and a local economy centered on ranching and agriculture. Its location at the top of the Hill Country gives the surrounding landscape a distinct character — rolling limestone hills, open pasture, and creeks that feed the Bosque River system. Meridian State Park, developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, sits three miles southwest of town and is the area's signature outdoor asset, with a 72-acre lake offering swimming, fishing, and no-wake boating alongside hiking and biking trails. Waco, the nearest larger city, is roughly an hour's drive and provides shopping, healthcare, employment, and airport access. Meridian suits people seeking a genuine small-town, county-seat way of life: a historic courthouse square, a tight-knit school district, ranching country, and a state park at the edge of town — with the convenience of Waco within reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

What county is Meridian in?

Meridian is the county seat of Bosque County, Texas, in the central part of the state about 47 miles northwest of Waco. It sits near the northern edge of the Hill Country, and nearby Clifton is the county's largest city.

What is Meridian known for?

Meridian is known as the county seat of Bosque County and for its historic 1886 courthouse, which anchors the town square. It is also known for Meridian State Park, a Civilian Conservation Corps-built park with a 72-acre lake, located just three miles southwest of town.

What school district serves Meridian?

Meridian is served by the Meridian Independent School District, a small two-campus district serving a few hundred students. Its compact size gives the schools a close-knit, community-centered character typical of small Central Texas towns.

How far is Meridian from Waco?

Meridian is about 47 miles northwest of Waco, roughly an hour's drive by state highway. The town has no public transit, so residents rely on personal vehicles for commuting and errands, with Waco serving as the nearest larger city for shopping, healthcare, and employment.

City Guide

About Meridian

Real Estate & Housing

Meridian's housing stock is that of a small, established Central Texas county seat. Homes include older frame and brick houses on shaded streets near the courthouse square, mid-century ranch-style residences, and scattered newer construction, with larger properties and acreage on the town's edges blending into surrounding Bosque County ranchland. Lots are generally roomier than in city neighborhoods, and there is little multifamily or high-density development. For buyers, the market offers affordability and space rather than large planned subdivisions, with the tradeoff of a longer commute to Waco. The character is modest, well-kept, and small-town — a mix of historic core, established neighborhoods, and open country beyond the city limits.

Neighborhoods

Meridian is organized around its courthouse square, and the town's residential pattern is compact rather than subdivided into named developments. The oldest homes cluster close to the square and the courthouse, on streets that date to the town's 1854 founding, giving the core a settled, historic feel. Farther out, streets transition into ranch-style homes and larger lots, and beyond the city limits the landscape opens into Bosque County's ranches and farms. Meridian State Park sits just southwest of town, and the schools and county offices anchor the community's edges. This layout means most of the town is walkable at its center, with a quick transition to rural acreage in every direction.

Lifestyle in Meridian

Life in Meridian is quiet, unhurried, and rooted in its role as a county seat and ranching community. The town square, anchored by the 1886 courthouse, remains the civic and social center, hosting the everyday rhythm of county business and community gatherings. Ranching and agriculture shape the local identity, and the surrounding Bosque County countryside offers a genuine rural pace. There is no rush of commercial development; residents shop locally and turn to Waco for larger needs. It is a lifestyle for people who value small-town continuity, neighborly familiarity, and access to the outdoors — the state park, the county roads, and the open Hill Country landscape — over urban convenience.

Schools & Education

Meridian is served by the Meridian Independent School District, a small district of two campuses and a few hundred students. Its compact size means close student-teacher relationships and a school system tightly woven into community life, with the Yellow Jacket athletics and school events serving as town gathering points. The district covers the city and the surrounding rural area of Bosque County, giving it a broad but sparsely populated service zone. For families, the appeal is the intimate, town-centered scale of the schools rather than the breadth of a large district — with larger educational and extracurricular options available in Waco and the surrounding region for those willing to travel.

Getting Around

Meridian lies about 47 miles northwest of Waco, connected to the region by state highways through the Bosque County countryside. There is no public transit in the town, so residents depend on personal vehicles, and commuting to Waco for work, shopping, or healthcare is roughly an hour's drive each way. Within town, the compact layout around the courthouse square makes short trips walkable, but most daily errands and all regional travel require a car. This distance-to-city tradeoff is central to Meridian's character: it offers a removed, small-town setting while keeping the amenities and employment base of the greater Waco area within a manageable drive.

Parks & Recreation

Meridian State Park is the centerpiece of recreation in the area. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the park sits three miles southwest of town among limestone bluffs at the top of the Hill Country, with a 72-acre lake for swimming, fishing, and no-wake boating, plus trails for hiking and biking. The park's small size keeps it uncrowded and family-friendly. Beyond the park, the Bosque County countryside offers fishing along the Bosque River, ranch roads for cycling, and open Hill Country landscape for hunting and wildlife viewing. The town's courthouse square and community events round out a recreation profile that is quiet, outdoors-oriented, and distinctly rural Texas.
