Kountze is the county seat of Hardin County in Southeast Texas, set among the dense pine and hardwood forests of the Big Thicket region about 27 miles northwest of Beaumont. With a population of roughly 2,100, it is part of the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area. The city was named for Herman and Augustus Kountze, financial backers of the Sabine and East Texas Railroad, and its growth followed the timber industry that shaped the region. Hardin County's heavily forested landscape — more than 89 percent of the county is wooded — made lumber the foundation of the local economy, and Kountze remains a timber town at heart, describing itself as the gateway to the Big Thicket. Kountze anchors one of the most ecologically distinctive areas in Texas. Big Thicket National Preserve, a convergence of nine distinct ecosystems, has its visitor center on FM 420 within the city, and the preserve's trailheads, bayous, and paddle routes radiate outward from town. The city serves as the governmental center of Hardin County, with the county courthouse and offices anchoring a modest downtown. Transportation runs through Kountze at the junction of U.S. Highways 69 and 287, along with State Highway 326 and several farm-to-market roads, connecting the town south to Beaumont and the Golden Triangle and north toward Lufkin and the East Texas interior.
