Kirbyville is a city in Jasper County, Texas, in the piney woods of Deep East Texas, a region defined by dense forests, the Big Thicket, and a long timber heritage. The 2020 census counted 2,036 residents. The town was established in 1895, when the Gulf, Beaumont and Kansas City Railroad reached the site, and it was named for John Henry Kirby, a prominent lumber businessman of the era. Timber and the railroad gave Kirbyville its start, and the surrounding forest still shapes the area's identity. The city sits along U.S. Highway 96, which threads through the pine forests of the Big Thicket as it runs north from Buna toward Jasper. The Big Thicket is one of the most biologically diverse areas in North America, and its preservation as a national preserve in 1974 cemented the region's reputation as an ecological treasure. Just outside Kirbyville lies the E.O. Siecke State Forest, established in 1924 as the first state forest in Texas, a roughly 1,700-acre tract that reflects the area's forestry roots. Kirbyville functions as a small service center for the surrounding rural countryside, with schools, churches, and local businesses anchoring daily life. The community's economy has long been tied to timber, and it retains the character of a working East Texas town, with a suburban-rural mix and a high share of owner-occupied homes. Public education is provided by Kirbyville Consolidated Independent School District, which operates campuses including Kirbyville High School for students across the surrounding area. For recreation, residents are within reach of the Big Thicket National Preserve's trails and waterways and the nearby state forest, with larger cities such as Beaumont and Jasper offering additional services and employment within a regional drive.
