Iola is a small incorporated city in Grimes County, Texas, in the gently rolling countryside of the county's north-central portion, along Farm to Market Road 39 at the headwaters of Ragan Creek. It sits roughly between College Station to the southwest and Huntsville to the east, in a landscape of pasture, timber, and scattered farmsteads that has remained largely agricultural. With a population of only about 310, it is one of the smaller incorporated municipalities in the region. The community's roots are among the oldest in Texas settlement. Iola is believed to be named for Edward Ariola, one of Stephen F. Austin's original colonists, who settled in the vicinity in 1836. A Methodist church organized in the area in 1852, and the community grew as a small rural crossroads serving the surrounding farms and ranches. For most of its history Iola remained unincorporated, until a residential vote in 2007 made it the fifth incorporated city in Grimes County. Today Iola is anchored by its school district, the Iola Independent School District, which serves the community and surrounding area and functions as its primary social and civic institution. There is no real commercial district, and residents rely on nearby Navasota, Bryan-College Station, and Huntsville for shopping, healthcare, and employment.
