Buckholts is a small town in northwestern Milam County, in Central Texas. It sits at the intersection of U.S. Highway 190, State Highway 36, and Farm Road 1915, about nine miles northwest of Cameron, the county seat. The 2020 census recorded 365 residents. The community grew up beside the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and its history reflects that rail-era prosperity. By 1948 Buckholts had a school, three churches, three factories, and roughly thirty businesses, a scale that marked it as a genuine small commercial center for the surrounding farms. Like many small Central Texas towns, it thinned after the 1960s as rail-era commerce consolidated elsewhere, and its population settled into the mid-300s. The town has nonetheless retained its incorporated government, its churches, and its own school district. The town itself is compact, while the surrounding countryside holds larger rural tracts, small farms, and open pasture. Its location on a U.S. highway corridor connects quickly to Cameron and, beyond, to Temple and the larger Killeen-Temple region to the west, giving residents access to employment, shopping, and medical services without living in a larger town.
