Wallisville is an unincorporated community in northern Chambers County, Texas, on the east side of the Trinity River along Interstate 10. It lies about twenty miles east of Baytown, forty-two miles west of Beaumont, and eleven miles northwest of Anahuac, the county seat, placing it within the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. The community's history reaches back to 1825, when Elisha Henry Roberts Wallis settled his family at Wallis Hill, a site east of the river. Wallisville holds a notable place in county history: it was chosen over Anahuac to serve as the Chambers County seat in 1858 and held that role for fifty years, until 1908, when the seat returned to Anahuac. That chapter left the community with a legacy of early Gulf Coast settlement along the lower Trinity River, and the town's location on the river and the railroad-era trade routes shaped its early growth. Today Wallisville is best known for its natural surroundings rather than its civic past. The Wallisville Lake Project, a roughly 20,000-acre wetland complex managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, encompasses estuarine marshes, forested swamps, and bottomland hardwoods along the lower Trinity. The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge lies nearby, offering kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and crabbing at sites such as Champion Lake and Pickett's Bayou, and Lake Charlotte sits a few miles from the community. Students in Wallisville attend Anahuac Independent School District schools. For residents, Wallisville offers a rural, river-centered way of life within commuting distance of the industrial and petrochemical employment centers of Baytown, Mont Belvieu, and the greater Houston region, while remaining close to the wetlands and wildlife areas that define the northern Chambers County landscape.
