Colorado County Farm Community
Apartments in Garwood, TX
Welcome to Garwood, a small Colorado County farming community along the old Santa Fe rail line, home to a National Blue Ribbon elementary school.
Garwood is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Colorado County, Texas, in the southeastern part of the state between Houston and the Gulf Coast. About 510 residents live in the community, according to the 2020 census. Garwood's history as a small farm and rail town dates to the early 20th century, when it grew along the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway; by 1915 the town counted roughly 750 residents and a string of businesses along its main street. A 1922 fire destroyed most of the businesses on the east side of the street, and the town rebuilt and continued as a quiet agricultural center. Farming and ranching define the surrounding countryside, and most residents own their homes. Rice fields, cattle ranches, and row crops spread across the area, and the community's identity remains tied to agriculture and the school. The community's small commercial core and its homes sit within a landscape of fields and pastures typical of Colorado County's rural southeast. Garwood Elementary School, part of the Rice Consolidated Independent School District, has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, and the district's junior high is also located in the community, anchoring local life and drawing families to the area. Garwood's position along State Highway 71 and its rail heritage connect it to nearby Eagle Lake, El Campo, and the larger Houston region. Because the community is unincorporated, it relies on Colorado County for many services, while its school district and local organizations knit the community together. Garwood's unincorporated status and small population keep it a quiet, spread-out place, with homes on larger lots among the fields and the school campuses serving as gathering points. The surrounding countryside, with its ranches and cropland, gives Garwood the unhurried character of rural southeast Texas.
