Wharton County Rail Town
Apartments in Boling, TX
Welcome to Boling, a rural Wharton County community on Caney Creek, founded as a railroad town in 1900 and anchored by the Boling Independent School District.
Boling is a rural community in southeastern Wharton County, Texas, situated on the west bank of Caney Creek about nine miles southeast of the county seat of Wharton. It lies within the Gulf Coast prairie and farm country of southeastern Texas, a region defined by rice and cotton fields, cattle pasture, and a network of small farm-to-market roads. The community was founded in 1900, when the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway built a line through the area. It was named for Mary Bolling Vineyard, the young daughter of Robert E. Vineyard, who had the town surveyed. The railroad gave the settlement its early purpose as a shipping point, and by 1907 the growing town had established its own school. Boling's development continued through the first half of the 20th century, with a Chamber of Commerce organized in 1935 and the population reaching about 800 by the mid-1940s. Education has long been a unifying force in the area. The Boling Independent School District was organized in 1941, bringing together schools from the neighboring communities of Iago and Newgulf to form a single rural district. Today the district operates Boling High School and serves families across the surrounding countryside, making the school system the central institution of community life. Transportation runs along Farm Roads 1301 and 442, which connect Boling to Wharton and the rest of the county. The community remains small and agricultural, with a dispersed pattern of farms, ranches, and single-family homes rather than dense development. For residents, Boling offers a quiet, rural setting within practical reach of Wharton's services and the broader Houston and Gulf Coast region beyond.
